There are three types of notary services that are performed.
An Acknowledgement is when the signer appears before the Notary and the Notary has positively identified the signer using satisfactory evidence of identity according to state laws. The signer(s) may sign the document before meeting with the Notary or in the presence of the Notary.
A Jurat, also known as Verification Upon Oath or Affirmation, is where the signer(s) swear to the truthfulness of the contents of the documents to the Notary out loud. The document must be signed in front of a Notary after the Notary has positively identified the signer(s) according to state laws.
Oath or Affirmation are both a spoken solemn promise that is spoken to a Notary in relation to a notary act, such as a Jurat or as an act in its own right. An Oath is a promise to a Supreme Being while an Affirmation is for those that do not believe in a higher power so they swear on their personal honor. Lying in an Oath or Affirmation to a Notary is perjury.
Copy Certification is a document that is certified by the Notary that it is an accurate reproduction of the original.
Under state law a Notary is not allowed to tell the signer which notary they need on a certain document. It is the responsibility of the signer to know which type of notary they need.
